Pat Murphy Sheehy source of inspiration Essay Example For Students

Pat Murphy Sheehy: source of inspiration Essay Washington, D.C. is overrun with two things every summer: mosquitoes and theatre. The cause of the former is the swampland on which our nations capital rests. The latter owes its existence to a kinder, gentler Source the Source Theatre Company, that is. In a city whose idea of drama is a filibuster on the Senate floor, the Sources annual Washington Theatre Festival has helped nourish a vibrant homegrown theatre community. Over the past 14 seasons, the festival has become a delivery room for new work, which would make the companys producing artistic director Pat Murphy Sheehy a midwife of sorts. The festival encompasses some 40 to 50 original works over a 10-to-12-week span, setting a force of more than 100 local actors, directors, designers and stage managers into action. Why do they do it? The challenge, offers Sheehy. There is something special about a situation that forces you to deal with the bare bones of what theatre is communicating. You rediscover that imagination is the key thing. The productions, ranging from full-scale to script-in-hand readings, are mounted in a whirlwind race against time and money. Intrepid artists find themselves faced with questions such as: How can one pull off a drama about six Southern women spanning 50 years, three generations and numerous exotic locales, with a few chairs, two actors and one pair of tights in the parlor of an embassy.? When Sheehy brought a production to the Edinburgh Festival a few years ago, she was amazed by the way that festival seemed to take over the city (You couldnt open a public telephone booth without a production going on inside, she avows), and she took the lesson to heart. Since then, the Washington festival has incorporated public buildings, bookstores, clubs and museums as venues. This year, for example, an evening of plays based on Joan of Arc will be presented at the French embassy. If Sheehy has her way, it may soon be open season on Metro stations. Seamless resilience   Few are the Washington-based artists who have not cut their theatrical teeth in a festival production. Recent alumni include D.C.-based playwrights Ernest Joselovitz, T.J. Edwards, Oni Faida Lampley, Lucy Tom Lehrer, Allyson Curnin, Judlyne A. Lilly and Gary Bonasorte. When Sheehy accepted her 1993 Washington Post Award for Distinguished Community Service, she asked those who had participated in a festival to stand and accept the award with her. The handful of people left in their seats applauded. The challenge of finding, nurturing and sustaining new work and talent has always been the focus of Sources mission. What Ive tried to do with to do with Source, explains Sheehy, who assumed artistic leadership of the theatre in 1987, is provide some kind of artistically challenging and supportive place, so that the artist has the chance to work his or her way upso that theres a progression. Creating a supportive environment, however, has not always been easy. When I took over the theatre, my goal was to slowly put the theatre on solid financial ground, because you cant try new things unless youre stable, says Sheehy. Over the past six seasons, she has consolidated the Source into a single company-owned space and maintained a stable, if modest, $400,000 budget. We had been somewhat recession-proof in D.C., Sheehy reasons, since the citys industries are mainly government and tourism. But we are seeing the recession now. This past year was the most difficult I can remember. The economy notwithstanding, there is an optimism about Sheehy which suggests seamless resilience. You cant let yourself get worn down by the challenge of raising money, she asserts. I have to work against synthesizing everything down to that problem, because its a constant with theatres. You have to rise above that and stay focused on the work. .udc4f35d78b554078158d3ac37774bf5c , .udc4f35d78b554078158d3ac37774bf5c .postImageUrl , .udc4f35d78b554078158d3ac37774bf5c .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .udc4f35d78b554078158d3ac37774bf5c , .udc4f35d78b554078158d3ac37774bf5c:hover , .udc4f35d78b554078158d3ac37774bf5c:visited , .udc4f35d78b554078158d3ac37774bf5c:active { border:0!important; } .udc4f35d78b554078158d3ac37774bf5c .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .udc4f35d78b554078158d3ac37774bf5c { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .udc4f35d78b554078158d3ac37774bf5c:active , .udc4f35d78b554078158d3ac37774bf5c:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .udc4f35d78b554078158d3ac37774bf5c .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .udc4f35d78b554078158d3ac37774bf5c .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .udc4f35d78b554078158d3ac37774bf5c .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .udc4f35d78b554078158d3ac37774bf5c .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .udc4f35d78b554078158d3ac37774bf5c:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .udc4f35d78b554078158d3ac37774bf5c .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .udc4f35d78b554078158d3ac37774bf5c .udc4f35d78b554078158d3ac37774bf5c-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .udc4f35d78b554078158d3ac37774bf5c:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: A public life EssayOne senses that if she had her druthers, Sheehy would move the festival into more inner-city neighborhoods, or search out and produce more new works that address volatile social issues, like the production she directed last September of Kevin Heelans Distant Fires, about a racial conflict in nearby Ocean City, Md. Yet the impulses of Sheehy the artist are tempered with the pragmatism of the producer: I dont know how many tickets that kind of committed work sells, she concedes, and sometimes you have to think about that. Wife and mother and artist   This combination of idealism and pragmatism stems from what she describes as a discrepancy in her personality. I was all these things you werent supposed to be if you were an artist. I had this side of me that was very organized and concerned with the community and the big picture, which didnt at all fit into the stereotype I grew up with of what an artist was. I guess I had to give myself permission to do all the things I wanted to do like be a wife and mother and artist and organized. Permission manifests itself in involvement: Having served as president of the League of Washington Theatres, chairman of the D.C. Commission on the Arts, and on numerous mayoral task forces, her affiliations extend beyond arts advocacy to such areas as neighborhood development and the restoration of historic theatres. Sheehy likes having this much activity on her plate and seems to thrive on it. Politics and theatre are a hand-and-glove fit in my life. I guess its reflective of what I do at Source a culmination, striving to find a whole picture of myself.

The Life Of George Washington Essays (606 words) -

The Life Of George Washington Flexner, James Thomas. George Washington. Little. 1967 George Wahington George Washington was one of the founding fathers of the United States of America. He served as commander-in-chief of the Continental army during the Revolutionary War, and later served as the first president of the United States. His thoughts and ideas helped mold the United States into the great country that it is today. George Washington was born on February 22, 1732 in Westmoreland County, Virginia. He was the eldest son of Augustine Washington and Mary Ball Washington. He received no formal education, but he read geography, military history, agriculture, deportment, and composition. Washington later developed a powerful and convincing style of speech and writing. He enjoyed sports and social occasions, and he later became a surveyor for landowners on the Virginia frontier. George Washington was elected president of the United States in 1789, and in New York City on April 30, 1789, he took the oath of office as President of the United States at age 57. He was extremely influential in the initial operation of the new government. After the ballot he wrote, My movements to the chair of government will be accompanied by feeling not unlike those of a culprit, who is going to the place of his execution. Washington's task was to organize a government but also create a role for the highest officer of the new nation. Both tasks earned him enemies. One of Washington's first duties of office was establishing a cabinet. He appointed Alexander Hamilton secretary of treasury and Thomas Jefferson secretary of state. Washington allowed Jefferson to pursue a policy of seeking trade with European nations. Hamilton proposed important ideas such as a funded national debt and the creation of the Bank of the United States. The first United States census was taken in 1790 which showed the population to be four million. He created departments within the government, each with different jobs. The government issued money that was good in all states. President Washington also helped plan a new capital for the nation that was named Washington in his honor. Also, Vermont and Kentucky were added as states in 1791 and 1792 respectively. George Washington reluctantly agreed to serve a second term as president, even though he wanted to go home to Mount Vernon. An outbreak of war in Europe plagued Thomas Jefferson's foreign policy design. Alexander Hamilton formed a pro-British foreign policy during Washington's second administration. Jay's Treaty of 1795 settled outstanding American differences with Great Britain. This treaty was extremely controversial, although the treaty was passed by a narrow margin in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. The Whiskey Rebellion in western Pennsylvania against a federal excise tax was his critical domestic challenge. He himself rode partway to the field at the head of the militia that was raised to put down the rebellion. Washington reorganized his cabinet in 1795, and Tennessee became a state in 1796. He was asked to return for another term as President, but he declined. Washington carefully planned a farewell speech to mark the end of his presidency, and issued his farewell speech on September 7, 1796. He was succeeded by his vice-president, John Adams the following March 4. He then retired to Mount Vernon, where he died two years later on December 14, 1799 at the age of 67. George Washington remains one of the most important figures in the history of the United States of America. Washington's accomplishments are and will continue to serve as precedents for future Presidents. I feel that his two terms in office as the President of the United States were the most important periods in the history our country. He shaped the government that we live under today, and if not for him, our government might be completely different. Biographies

Natives essays

Natives essays The First Native Americans were called the Paleo- Indians; they first arrived in eastern North America between 30,000 and 10,000 B.C. The Paleo- Indians because nomadic hunters, searching for food. Years later during the Archaic Period (8,000B.C.) the Paleo- Indians began to developed permanent lifestyles and began hunting shorter distances for food. Soon Europeans started to migrate into the natives land, with them they brought deadly diseases that resulted in the death of the very young and very old. Therefore all the responsibilities that both the very young and very old were beginning to slowly end. The most important responsibility that was being forgotten about was the stories that the old told the young; slowly the history of natives would be unknown. The Increase of European immigration of the 17th century upset the Native American communities, as the Europeans brought new ideas of land ownership. A man by the name of William Penn (proprietor of Delaware), one of the few Eur opeans, insisted that people should tread the Native Americans fairly and instead of stealing the land the Europeans should buy it. However the expansion of the Europeans forced many natives in Delaware to move to the west and northern regions of North America. This has to do with group rights in the charter. The Charter of Rights and Freedoms does recognize the Natives as a group. Even though the federal government did everything in its power to make sure that Natives didnt get what they wanted. The federal government said that nothing would take away or assault what they already had. But the federal government was taking way something; they recognized them as a group. ...

Strategic planing Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Strategic planing - Coursework Example Netflix started off with a novel approach to DVD movie rentals by letting customers rent for cheap as compared to its competitors like Blockbuster and more importantly it allowed its customers to keep the movie for as long as they wanted without any late fee penalties. It became an instant factor in its success. In today’s busy world the ease of keeping a rental movie without having to worry about late fee charged to the clients was a service that no other competitors of Netflix had thought of. This business recognized it and reaped tremendous financial rewards in the long term. In the last few years Netflix again left its competitors far behind and even drove its major competition out of the market by simply recognizing and incorporating the Internet technology to its business. The streaming videos and the growing number of internet users was a factor which would influence almost all businesses if it has not already done so. Netflix allowed its subscribers to watch instant movies without having to pay any extra amount. This was a major boost to their business expansion and even took clients from cable where people had to pay extra to watch a new movie. The use of emerging internet technologies during this economic down turn gave Netflix an extra edge over its competition as its subscribers are paying for internet already and at a very low cost they can watch movies instantly without having to leave the comfort of their home. Opportunity for Expansion. Should a business always expand if given the chance to do so? Think of a company that recently added one or more new businesses to the organization. Does the addition seem to be in line with the original mission, vision, and core competencies? The three facts which the management needs to analyze are the current business situation, its future direction and the strategy to get there. The first most important factor is the realistic assessment of the present situation. Any shortcoming in

Frequency Distributions Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Frequency Distributions - Essay Example Initially, there was a bimodal distribution, showing that students were grouped into those that understood better (scores that clustered around the top of the scale) and those that did not understand as well (scores clustering near the lower end of the scale). By the second week, the two groups of students did combine into one unified group; but the majority still did have trouble grasping the concepts in class. A minority of students did far better than the rest and got high score; while the majority still scored towards the lower side of the scale. Scores from the third week show that the class as a whole was starting to make sense of the concepts being taught, and were improving in their understanding. This can be understood from the movement of the majority of the scores from below the 50% mark to very close to the 50% scores point. By now, about half the class understood the concepts reasonably well, scoring above average, and only half the class was struggling and scoring less than average on understanding the concepts. This trend again changed in week 4; where a negative skew showed that now a majority of students had caught up with the concepts being taught in class; and only a minority was still scoring low on the scale while the majority was scoring towards the higher side.
